Technology & Innovation

College Prep mindfully integrates technology to support innovative teaching and learning in and beyond the classroom.
Instruction in the effective, ethical, and appropriate uses of technology begins with a ninth grade tech orientation and is revisited often. All students receive identical MacBook Air computers with common software as part of College Prep’s 1:1 laptop program. This standard set of software and hardware facilitates communication, enables collaboration in and beyond the classroom, offers school-provided technical support, and ensures technology equity for all students. Get the answers to frequently asked questions about our laptop program here.

Other Technology resources that enhance learning include more than a dozen online research databases, fabrication software and hardware in the xLab maker space, a suite of computer science classes, and a Technology Office staffed by faculty who plan thoughtful and innovative ways of supporting students and teachers.

the xlab makerspace

Unleash your creativity and bring your ideas to life in the xLab, College Prep’s makerspace! Whether you're an experienced maker or just starting, our space is designed to inspire and support your innovative projects in and outside the classroom.
Explore Our Tools and Materials
The xLab is equipped with a wide variety of tools and resources designed to making across multiple levels and disciplines. Key tools include our Epilog Fusion Maker 36 laser cutter, perfect for precise cutting and engraving, and Ultimaker S5 Pro 3D printers, ideal for bringing digital designs to life with 3d prints.

Our makerspace also offers:

  • Digital Fabrication Tools: Our 3d printers, laser cutter and banner printer allows our students to create precise, custom designs from digital files.
  • Hand and Power Tools: Whether working on woodworking projects or general building, students have access to essential tools like drills, saws, and hand tools.
  • Electronics and Robotics: With microcontrollers, soldering sets, and sensors, students can dive into electronics and robotics projects.
  • Textile and Craft Tools: Sewing machines, knitting/crocheting materials, and embroidery tools allow for a variety of fabric and craft-based projects.
Join Our Making Community
The xLab is home to two student groups:
  • iTeam: This student-led development and innovation group focuses on coding apps and creating digital tools to benefit our CPS community.
  • Maker's Club: Dedicated to sharing the fun in making, the Maker's Club hosts engaging workshops and training sessions for students and faculty.
Get Involved
In addition to being a hub for our student groups, the xLab is also an integral part of several classes, offering hands-on learning experiences. Students can also get trained to use the tools for their school projects, gaining valuable skills and the confidence to tackle any creative challenge.
Spending time in the xLab allowed me to explore 3D modeling, additive manufacturing techniques, and laser cutting. Working with industry-level 3D printers I learned some of the core concepts within the field of computer-controlled manufacturing, such as G-Code. At the same time, as a leader of the Maker's Club, I got to educate other members of our community and make 3D printing accessible to everyone on campus."
