Why did you choose College Prep? I was drawn to College Prep because of the academic rigor and great things I heard about the faculty. I love learning and challenging myself, and I felt like I would grow in College Prep’s environment. I was also excited about the class offerings and knew CPS would prepare me well for college and beyond. I liked that College Prep was not too big. I went to a small middle school and enjoyed the small class environment there, and I didn't want my high school to be that big. I was a bit worried that CPS would be too serious, especially because I didn't want my entire high school experience to be solely focused on academics. However, that hasn’t been the case and College Prep has so many support structures that helped me find a good balance.

What is the biggest difference between middle school and high school? In my opinion, the biggest difference between middle school and high school is that in high school, I’ve had more opportunities to explore my interests and connect with people. I went to a small middle school with only 13 kids in my entire grade, so we had no choice over our electives or even who we hung out with since it was so small. I did enjoy the small environment, but it was very different from high school. In high school, I’ve been able to try many new classes (such as debate and dance) and explore my interests. In doing so, I've met people with similar interests who I connect with more. The school is big enough for you to explore your passions and discover things that you enjoy, but small enough for there to still be a strong sense of community.

Campus Involvement: I take dance, which I love because it is always a fun class where I get to destress. I also joined the swim team despite having no competitive swimming experience. It’s been really fun! Everyone is always super nice even when I don’t do super well. I’m a mentor in the Partners Program (I mentor a middle schooler), I’m a member of our Black Student Union (BSU), and I do policy debate.

What has been your favorite class so far (and why)? I love English class so much. I’ve always enjoyed reading and writing, but I also really liked the English I curriculum. Throughout the year, we talked about a construct called the Master Narrative, which is sort of like a perspective broadcasted as reality, even though it doesn't usually show the whole picture and often suppresses another group's point of view on the same issue. We read many stories about different perspectives, usually suppressed by the master narrative, and I found it super interesting. I also loved the classroom environment. My teacher was always excited about everything and I think having a teacher who loved what she was doing made the class even better. I also felt comfortable expressing my ideas, knowing I wouldn't be judged; that made the class space more enjoyable for me.

What is your favorite thing about College Prep? I love many things about College Prep. I love the teachers, campus, students, and just the general vibe of the school. All the faculty members at CPS are fantastic. They are supportive and genuinely want the best for you, so they will always help you in any way they can. Same with the students. Students at CPS are friendly, and the community is open and non-judgmental. I also love how even though academics are really important at CPS, we still have fun; there are usually many opportunities for me to de-stress and enjoy myself!

Three unusual things about me:
1. I was born and raised in Canada, but I didn't learn how to ice skate until I moved to California
2. I really, really love ketchup
3. Apparently I suck at rock paper scissors (according to my brother)
